The UK government’s plans for Brexit have been dealt a blow by a landmark High Court ruling that the Article 50 divorce process for leaving the EU requires a vote by parliament. This means the government cannot trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty beginning formal exit negotiations with the EU  on its own.

The government is appealing, with a further hearing expected next month.
